Network Rail Sets £130m Christmas–New Year Rail Works, Closing Key Routes

The operator says the holiday lull offers the quietest window for multi‑day upgrades backed by more than £130 million.

Overview

  • London Waterloo will be closed to trains from 25–28 December, then run a reduced timetable from 29 December to 4 January.
  • No trains will operate between Leeds and York from Christmas Day until 26 January.
  • On the West Coast Main Line, no services will run between Milton Keynes and Rugby from 25 December to 5 January for a junction replacement at Hanslope, and between Preston and Carlisle from 31 December to 15 January for a bridge replacement, with Carlisle–Lockerbie closed 1–7 January for signalling work.
  • No trains will run between Cambridge North, Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds and Stansted Airport from 25 December to 5 January.
  • In Scotland, routes between Dalmuir and Balloch/Helensburgh Central and between Glasgow Queen Street and Crianlarich will be closed from 24 December to 2 January, and passengers are advised to check journey planners, book ahead and expect diversions or replacement buses as 95% of the network remains open.
