Network Rail Sets £130 Million Christmas Works, Shuttering Waterloo and Key Routes

The timing uses the quietest week to accelerate reliability upgrades.

Overview

  • London Waterloo will have no trains on 27–28 December with services terminating at Clapham Junction, followed by a reduced timetable from 29 December to 4 January, and Vauxhall and Queenstown Road will be closed on specified days.
  • More than 350 engineers will renew track, switches, crossings and conductor rail between Queenstown Road and Nine Elms, with platform alterations at Queenstown Road as part of the Waterloo works.
  • West Coast Main Line blocks include no services between Milton Keynes and Rugby from 25 December to 5 January, Preston and Carlisle from 31 December to 15 January for the £60m Clifton bridge replacement, and Carlisle and Lockerbie from 1–7 January for signalling work.
  • Other long closures include no trains between Leeds and York from Christmas Day to 26 January and no services between Cambridge North, Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds and Stansted Airport from Christmas Day to 5 January.
  • In Scotland, no trains will run between Dalmuir and Balloch/Helensburgh Central or between Glasgow Queen Street and Crianlarich from 24 December to 2 January, while around 95% of the network remains unaffected and passengers are advised to plan for diversions and rail‑replacement buses.
