Network Rail Releases CCTV of Near-Miss at Norfolk Level Crossing During Half-Term Safety Push

Officials say the near miss underscores how misjudgments at crossings can be deadly on lines where trains reach 100mph.

Overview

  • The CCTV, filmed earlier this month at a pedestrian crossing north of Diss in Norfolk, was released to target young people during school half-term.
  • Network Rail said the individual in the video was unharmed and shared the clip to highlight risky behaviour such as selfies, games and distraction near tracks.
  • Footage shows the person appearing to ignore a red stop light before pulling back at the last second as a Greater Anglia train passes.
  • Trains on this section can travel at up to 100mph, and operators urged the public to respect gates, barriers, lights and alarms because fast services take a long time to stop.
  • Greater Anglia’s safety chief Matthew Wakefield reiterated the warnings, and Metro reported eight UK level-crossing deaths in the past year, including 51 near misses in the Anglia region.
