Netherlands Logs Record Illegal Fireworks Seizures as Fires, Crashes and Raids Mark Year-End

A nationwide consumer-fireworks ban from 1 January looms, focusing efforts on the final night of legal use.

Overview

  • The Public Prosecution Service’s Vuurwerkbarometer shows 112,223 kg of illegal fireworks seized to date, up 7,433 kg in the last week and already above last year’s 107,281 kg.
  • Police reported major local hauls, including several thousand kilos in a Groenlo storage site with one arrest and EOD involvement, 1,100 kg in Weesp that prompted evacuations, 130 kg in a Honselersdijk van, and roughly 150 kg in West Betuwe.
  • Regional 112 reports detail a run of vehicle fires and suspected arson, with four overnight car and van fires in Utrecht and Zeist, multiple blazes in Rotterdam-Rijnmond, and repeated container and outdoor fires in Groningen.
  • Road incidents mounted in winter conditions, including cars in water or against trees, multi-vehicle crashes and rollovers, an arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, and seven injuries in a three-car collision near Boskoop.
  • Public-safety measures intensified, with Rijswijk extending a horeca closure after an earlier explosion and the OM confirming an officer shot a suspect in the leg during a knife threat inside a residence.
