Netherlands Jobless Rate Holds at 4.0% in October as Benefit Claims Climb

High churn kept unemployment unchanged as WW claims rose unevenly.

Overview

  • Unemployment totaled 411,000 people in October, equal to 4.0% of the labour force and unchanged from September, according to CBS.
  • UWV counted 195,400 active WW benefits at end‑October, up 8,000 from September and 16,400 higher than a year earlier (+9.1%).
  • Labour‑market flows were nearly balanced: 144,000 unemployed found work, 124,000 workers lost jobs, 93,000 stopped searching, and 135,000 began looking.
  • WW claims increased in most sectors except temporary employment agencies, with the steepest percentage rises in other industry (+24.6%), government (+23.2%) and agriculture/greenery/fishing (+20.6%).
  • Regional patterns diverged, with sharp year‑on‑year increases in parts of Gelderland (Hattem nearly +40%, Bronckhorst +30%, Heerde +29%, Heumen +27%) and a decline in Zeewolde (−7.5%) even as other Flevoland municipalities rose roughly 13% to 16%.
