Overview
- The temporary fixed border controls introduced on 9 December 2024 ended at the end of September and on 1 October 2026 the Koninklijke Marechaussee returned to an expanded Mobiel Toezicht Veiligheid (MTV) framework.
- Under the new MTV rules the Marechaussee may operate further inland—up to 20 kilometres from the German border—and can monitor the same road for up to 120 hours per month with no six-hour daily cap.
- Checks will be information- and risk-driven using intelligence on migration trends, smuggling methods and document fraud so that stops are less predictable for criminal networks.
- Operational capacity and personnel remain unchanged from the temporary regime while the scope of checks is widened to allow fuller inspections on selected trains and flights and more vehicle spot checks.
- Officials say the shift should reduce traffic disruption in border towns such as Oldambt and Westerwolde even as Germany has chosen to keep its temporary controls in place at least until March 2027, creating different practices on each side of the border.
