Netflix's 'Society of the Snow' Becomes First Hit of 2024

Society of the Snow, a film based on the real-life story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crash in 1972, has become Netflix's first hit of 2024 and is Spain's submission for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars.
The film tells the story of a rugby team and their supporters who were stranded in the Andes for 72 days after their plane crashed, resorting to cannibalism to survive.
The film is narrated by Numa Turcatti, a law student who was invited to tag along on the trip and is the last crash survivor to die before the group is rescued.
Despite the harsh conditions, including temperatures as low as -35 degrees Celsius, 16 out of 45 passengers survived the ordeal.
The film, directed by J. A. Bayona, was released in Uruguay on December 13, 2023, in Spain two days later, in the US on December 22, 2023, and debuted on Netflix on January 4, 2024.
