Netflix Pulls Phone-to-TV Casting on Most Devices

Netflix updated its help pages and told WIRED it retired the feature because too few members used it.

Overview

  • The support page now instructs users to navigate Netflix with their TV or streamer remote instead of casting from the mobile app.
  • Casting still works only on select legacy hardware—pre-remote Chromecasts, some Google Cast–enabled TVs, and Nest Hub smart displays—and only for subscribers on ad‑free plans.
  • Ad‑supported plans cannot cast at all, and newer hardware like Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, Android TV sets, and most modern smart TVs no longer appear as Cast targets.
  • The change rolled out quietly via app updates starting in mid‑November, with users reporting the Cast button disappearing before the policy was confirmed on December 1–2.
  • The removal pushes viewing to native TV apps, drawing user backlash and complicating common travel workflows where casting to hotel or Airbnb TVs was a convenience.
