Netflix Ends Legacy ‘Basis’ Plan for Remaining German Subscribers

The company is requiring affected users to pick a new plan or lose service, a move meant to shift price-sensitive accounts toward ad-supported or higher-priced ad-free tiers.

Overview

  • Mid-October Netflix began sending individualized notices to some remaining Basis subscribers in Germany that set a deadline tied to their billing cycle and warned that accounts will be canceled if no new plan is chosen.
  • Subscribers can move to the ad-supported Standard tier for €6.99 per month, switch to the ad-free Standard tier for €15.99 per month, or let their membership lapse after the paid period ends.
  • Staying ad-free will cost about €6 more per month than the old Basis rate of €9.99, and Netflix says the Standard plan includes Full HD and two simultaneous streams compared with Basis’s single-device HD.
  • Netflix tells customers that profiles, watch history and settings will be preserved when they change plans, and access will continue until the end of the already paid billing period even if the account is scheduled for cancellation.
  • The phase-out completes a change Netflix began in October 2023 for new sign-ups and follows a wider strategy of raising ad-free prices while offering lower-cost ad tiers to respond to competition from free short-video services and local streamers.
