Netflix Drops Forgotten Realms, Develops Live-Action D&D Series Ravenloft

Netflix hired writer John August with executive producer Alfonso Cuarón to adapt the gothic-horror origin of Strahd, produced with Hasbro's D&D unit and Esperanto Filmoj.

Overview

  • Netflix announced on Sept. 3, 2026 that it has halted development of its previously reported Forgotten Realms series and is now developing Ravenloft as a separate live-action project.
  • The series will focus on the origin of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich and is described by producers as a prestige gothic-horror drama that emphasizes tragic romance, dark magic, and supernatural intrigue.
  • John August is attached as writer and executive producer while Alfonso Cuarón is an executive producer with production partners Gabriel Marano for Hasbro and Richard Schwartz and Gaby Rodriguez for Esperanto Filmoj.
  • No release date or casting has been announced and Netflix and Wizards of the Coast say the project is in development rather than ready for production.
  • Ravenloft is one part of a broader D&D screen strategy from Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast that includes other projects such as HBO’s Baldur’s Gate, a shift that could change how the game’s settings appear across different platforms.
