Nerul Ceiling Collapse Injures Pregnant Woman as NMMC Cuts Utilities, Orders Evacuation

Officials cite the site's C-1 hazard status following prolonged redevelopment disputes.

Overview

  • The ceiling of a flat in NL-2 Vighnaharta Co-operative Housing Society, Sector 1, Nerul, collapsed around 5:00–5:30 am Wednesday in Building No. 6A4, injuring a 22-year-old pregnant resident.
  • The victim suffered a head wound, received stitches at civic hospitals in Nerul and Vashi, underwent a CT scan showing no major trauma, and was described as stable by a treating doctor.
  • NMMC disconnected water and sewage lines, notified MSEDCL to cut electricity, and instructed the building’s administrator to ensure immediate vacating of occupied flats.
  • The structure was declared C-1 (extremely dangerous) in 2016 with eviction notices issued; officials say the society was dissolved, an administrator appointed, and about 150 of 341 tenements continued to stay due to stalled redevelopment.
  • Residents said recent continuous rainfall likely weakened the already dilapidated structure, and reports carried minor discrepancies in the spelling of the injured woman’s name.
