Overview
- A rock-and-ice collapse on Langtang Lirung on 26 August produced a massive Sturzflut that killed more than 1,000 people and left thousands missing, and authorities have shifted from systematic search to recovery.
- On 11 October a landslide in Chumnubri, Gorkha blocked the Budhi Gandaki and then failed, producing a flash flood that destroyed about 45 houses and left at least five people missing while local teams carried out rescue and damage checks.
- Humanitarian groups report widespread destruction of schools and deep trauma among children, with Plan International saying over 30 schools were destroyed and warning that family separation, loss of income and damaged services raise risks of child labour and child marriage.
- Trekking and local economies are still disrupted as repair crews clear damaged roads and sections of routes such as parts of the Manaslu circuit remain impassable, forcing operators to reroute trips and threatening autumn income for guides and lodge owners.
- Climate researchers, including the World Weather Attribution team, link slope destabilisation to human-caused warming through thawing permafrost and glacier melt, and responders say existing international loss-and-damage limits of roughly $20 million per application are far too small for the scale of reconstruction needed.
