Nepal’s Digital Payments Push Relief Fund Past NPR 10 Billion

Connected QR codes, mobile banking, and international card rails have made direct person-to-government donations fast and accessible.

Overview

  • The Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund passed NPR 10 billion within 11 days of the August 26 Bhotekoshi floods, based on transaction totals published by the Finance Ministry and payment networks.
  • Fonepay logged 889,145 relief transactions with 815,219 domestic QR payments raising about NPR 2.095 billion while NCHL recorded 246,614 transactions with 112,932 QR payments producing NPR 390.5 million.
  • International card networks processed roughly 93,850 donations authenticated by 3D Secure that together amounted to about NPR 1.4 billion and platforms such as UPI and Alipay also sent measurable sums.
  • Nepal’s tech and banking sectors supported the drive by publishing payment links and QR codes and by making corporate gifts, with firms such as F1 Soft Group and Cedar Gate donating cash and relief materials.
  • The campaign shows how newer payment rails let ordinary Nepalis and the diaspora give directly to government relief accounts, a change from past crises like the 2015 earthquake when bank visits and cash were required.
