Nepal Allows Post‑2016 Indian ₹200 and ₹500 Notes Up to ₹25,000

The central bank says the move will ease tourism, smooth small trade, retain bans on pre‑2016 high‑denomination notes.

Overview

  • The Nepal Rastra Bank reissued a notice on Thursday clarifying that Indian and Nepalese nationals may carry ₹200 and redesigned ₹500 notes issued on or after November 9, 2016, up to a limit of ₹25,000 per person.
  • Notes of ₹500 and ₹1,000 issued before November 9, 2016, remain prohibited from entry and use in Nepal under the NRB rules.
  • The NRB reiterated customs rules that let travellers bring up to USD 5,000 or equivalent without declaring it and said the USD 5,000 exemption for Indian currency applies only if notes are in ₹100 or lower denominations.
  • NRB spokesperson Guru Prasad Paudel said Nepalese nationals may not bring Indian currency into Nepal from countries other than India and may not carry Indian currency from Nepal to a third country except India.
  • Officials say the change is meant to make everyday payments easier for Indian tourists and Nepalese traders across the open border while limiting misuse by keeping strict denomination, amount, and routing safeguards in place.
