Overview
- Neon announced the project Wednesday and said it will release the film and any related materials under the Creative Commons CC BY-SA license so others can copy, remix, or reuse the work if they credit creators and release derivatives under the same terms.
- The move followed earlier this month’s news that A24 bought an SCP Foundation movie from Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Studios, and it positions Neon as an explicitly “open-source” alternative to that separate studio project.
- The SCP Foundation Wiki team confirmed it has been in communication with Neon and praised the studio’s commitment to the license while also saying the Wiki does not formally endorse or participate in studio productions.
- A24’s acquisition remains active and unresolved questions persist over how CC BY-SA’s share-alike and anti-DRM rules interact with exclusive or traditional commercial film distribution.
- The dispute highlights a larger industry test case for adapting community-created, ShareAlike content to cinemas and could affect how contributors are credited, how profits and rights are handled, and how studios plan distribution for similar open-source properties.
