The playful contest aimed to draw local families as part of the racecourse's Oktoberfest programme.

Overview

  • Seven dachshunds raced 50 metres on the Parade Ring in wind and rain, wearing numbered shirts and guided by owners at the start and finish.
  • Five-year-old standard wirehaired dachshund Nellie took the 'top dog' title, earning a toy Champagne bottle and pretzel treats as owner-trainer Melanie Ashley received a bottle of Champagne.
  • Ralph, aged five, won 'best turned out' and collected a special hamper after owners were encouraged to dress dogs in Bavarian outfits.
  • The derby formed part of Chester's Oktoberfest-themed season finale with shareable touches such as 'Paw-secco' references and festive theming.
  • Chief executive Louise Stewart called the inaugural event "a real race to remember" and congratulated all participants, highlighting the racecourse's satisfaction with the outcome.
