Neighbour Who Threw Boiling Water on Grandmother Avoids Jail in Leeds Sentencing

After a guilty plea, the judge imposed a community order with rehabilitation requirements plus an indefinite restraining order, drawing anger from the victim’s family.

Overview

  • Ina Priestly, 56, changed her plea to guilty on the day her trial was due to start and was sentenced this week at Leeds Crown Court.
  • She received a two-year community order, up to 25 rehabilitation activity days, a £114 surcharge, and a restraining order prohibiting any contact with Susan Varley.
  • CCTV from February 6 shows Priestly pour boiling water over 68-year-old Varley during a school run in Morley, after which Priestly walked back inside.
  • Varley suffered severe burns to her scalp, face, ear and neck, was treated at Leeds General Infirmary, and later underwent surgical care for blisters at Pinderfields Hospital.
  • Family members say the four-year-old grandson narrowly avoided being scalded, credit Varley’s glasses with protecting her eyesight, and report ongoing trauma and new home security measures.
