Overview
- CSIR-NEERI and CSIR-NEIST officials distributed 100 gravity-driven, zero-energy NEERI-ZAR purification units to Jorhat this weekend, handing 10 units directly at Jonakimondal and transferring 90 to the district commissioner for wider allocation.
- Seventy-five units are household models with two 22-litre vessels that can serve about five to six people when run for one hour a day and 25 are community models with two 100-litre vessels that can serve roughly 10 households.
- The systems treat turbid and microbially contaminated ambient water without electricity, making them quick to transport, install and operate in flood zones where power and supply lines are down.
- The delivery was funded through a corporate social responsibility initiative and the district administration will manage on-the-ground distribution to affected villages.
- The NEERI-ZAR design was developed after the 2006 Barmer floods, has been refined through deployments in other disasters including recent Jammu and Kashmir floods, and is intended as an emergency stopgap rather than a long-term replacement for restored water infrastructure.
