Nebraska Priest Fatally Stabbed in Church Rectory, Suspect Arrested

Rev. Stephen Gutgsell's death not believed to be related to his past criminal history, according to authorities

  • Rev. Stephen Gutgsell, a Catholic priest, was fatally stabbed in the rectory of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, during an invasion early Sunday morning.
  • Kierre L. Williams, 43, of Sioux City, Iowa, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of homicide and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
  • Father Gutgsell was rushed to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where he later died from his injuries.
  • Father Gutgsell had previously pleaded guilty to theft by deception for embezzling $127,000 from another church in 2007, but authorities do not believe his death was related to his past criminal history.
  • The Archdiocese of Omaha has asked for prayers for Father Gutgsell, his family, and the St. John the Baptist parish community.
