Nebraska Priest Fatally Stabbed in Church Rectory, Suspect Arrested

Rev. Stephen Gutgsell's death not believed to be related to his past criminal history, according to authorities

Rev. Stephen Gutgsell, a Catholic priest, was fatally stabbed in the rectory of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, during an invasion early Sunday morning.
Kierre L. Williams, 43, of Sioux City, Iowa, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of homicide and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
Father Gutgsell was rushed to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where he later died from his injuries.
Father Gutgsell had previously pleaded guilty to theft by deception for embezzling $127,000 from another church in 2007, but authorities do not believe his death was related to his past criminal history.
The Archdiocese of Omaha has asked for prayers for Father Gutgsell, his family, and the St. John the Baptist parish community.
