Nebraska Man Dies in McDonald’s Drive-Thru After Being Pinned in ‘Freak Accident’

Police describe it as a freak accident tied to opening the door to reach the payment window.

Overview

  • Authorities identified the victim as Michael Dickinson, 69, found pinned between his vehicle and the drive-thru payment counter in Grand Island just before 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
  • He was transported to CHI St. Francis emergency room, where he was pronounced dead.
  • Division Chief Dean Elliott said it appears Dickinson opened his door to reach farther and became pinched between the door frame and the window counter.
  • A McDonald’s employee who tried to assist through the passenger side was injured, taken by ambulance to a hospital, and is expected to recover.
  • The Grand Island Police Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting the investigation, and the scene was cleared in about two hours as the restaurant remained open.
