Overview

  • The partnership repurposes the McCook Work Ethic Camp to add up to 280 ICE detention beds, with operations funded under the recently passed spending bill known as the One Big Beautiful Bill.
  • Nebraska corrections officials said about 186 current inmates will be transferred to other state facilities over 45 to 60 days before detainees are moved in.
  • DHS and Gov. Jim Pillen said roughly 20 Nebraska National Guard soldiers will provide administrative and logistical support, and the State Patrol will enter a 287(g) agreement to assist with arrests.
  • State corrections chief Rob Jeffreys said the site will hold low- to medium-risk detainees, while DHS described those to be held as "criminal illegal aliens."
  • The McCook conversion is the latest step in a rapid national expansion that includes new or planned sites in Florida, Indiana and at Fort Bliss, with the Everglades facility facing ongoing legal and environmental challenges.
