Near‑Total Lunar Eclipse Set for Aug. 27–28, 2026

Observers across the night side of Earth will see roughly 96–96.2% of the Moon slip into Earth’s dark umbra, giving the Moon a near‑total reddish glow.

  • The deep partial eclipse will occur overnight Thursday into Friday, August 27–28, 2026, with penumbral start around 01:23–01:24 UTC, partial start near 02:33–02:34 UTC, greatest eclipse about 04:12–04:14 UTC, partial end about 05:52 UTC and penumbral end near 07:02 UTC.
  • The event is visible from much of the Americas, Europe (including Scandinavia and Iceland), Africa, parts of Greenland and Antarctica and the eastern Pacific, while India and large parts of Australia will not see the eclipse.
  • At maximum roughly 96–96.2% of the Moon will lie inside Earth’s umbra so the Moon will look almost fully covered with a reddish or orange tint and a brighter white patch on its northeastern limb.
  • Viewing is safe with the naked eye and can be enhanced with binoculars or a small telescope; check local timing (for example Chicago’s peak is about 11:12 p.m. CDT on Aug. 27 per TimeandDate) and confirm weather and local visibility before heading out.
  • The eclipse belongs to Saros series 138, lasts about 339 minutes from penumbral start to finish and follows months of heightened public interest in sky events, so many astronomy groups and livestreams will offer guides and viewing events.
