Nearly Half of UK Women Aren’t Checking Breasts Regularly, Poll Finds, as ‘Checklist’ Campaign Launches

Health leaders say early detection improves outcomes, prompting calls to attend screening.

Overview

  • A YouGov poll of 2,283 UK women published on 25 September found 45% do not check their breasts regularly and 11% have never checked, up from 41% not checking in 2022.
  • Among those who do check, 32% said they are not confident they would notice a change, with forgetting, lack of habit and not knowing how cited as common barriers.
  • Breast Cancer Now called the rise a serious concern and will launch a new ‘Checklist’ awareness drive for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
  • The charity reports about two thirds of breast cancers in England are detected after someone notices a change and speaks to a GP.
  • NHS breast screening leaders urged people to keep appointments, with routine invitations issued every three years for those aged 50 to 71.
