Nearly Half of Spaniards Aged 18–30 Report Childhood or Teen Violence, Government Survey Finds

The youth ministry outlines a reform package to improve prevention, data quality, judicial specialization.

Overview

  • The first nationwide study, surveying more than 9,000 people aged 18–30, reports lifetime prevalences of 48.1% for psychological violence, 40% for physical violence and 28.9% for sexual violence.
  • Parents and close family are the main perpetrators of psychological and physical abuse, while sexual violence is most often attributed to partners (32.3%), unknown adults (25.6%) or friends (21%).
  • Violence frequently begins early and endures, with about one in five recalling abuse at ages 3–11 and roughly 10% of sexual-violence victims saying it continued into adulthood.
  • Help-seeking and formal complaints are rare, as over half of victims report receiving no support and only a small minority filed reports, including 14% of boys and 6% of girls in sexual-violence cases.
  • The Ministry of Youth and Childhood, led by Sira Rego, is advancing LOPIVI reforms, centralized registries and specialized judicial teams, and plans to repeat the survey to monitor changes over time.
