Nearly Half of Brazilians Say Public Security Has Worsened Under Lula, Poll Finds

The new Paraná Pesquisas survey, conducted Oct. 21–24, captures views before Rio’s Oct. 28 police megaoperation.

Overview

  • The nationwide survey interviewed 2,020 voters across Brazil with a margin of error of ±2.2 percentage points and 95% confidence.
  • Assessments of public health are split, with 26.3% saying conditions improved, 33.5% saying they worsened and 36.7% seeing no change.
  • Views on public education are similarly divided, with 29.1% reporting improvement, 34.3% deterioration and 32.5% no change.
  • Respondents report modest gains in household finances since April, with 27.8% now seeing improvement versus 18.9% then, 40% reporting stability and 29.7% citing decline.
  • The poll preceded the Rio de Janeiro operation the state government describes as its most lethal, which it says left 64 dead.
