Ofgem is pressing energy firms to boost daily meter installations from around 1,000 to 5,000 to prevent widespread heating and hot water failures.

Overview

  • The Radio Teleswitch Service that controls timed heating and hot water tariffs will be deactivated on June 30, leaving 392,000 households at risk of losing programmed heating and hot water services.
  • Energy suppliers are replacing about 1,000 RTS meters per day but need to scale up to 5,000 daily installations to meet the end-of-June deadline.
  • Ofgem has demanded suppliers submit action plans and outline contingency measures for households unable to upgrade in time.
  • Octopus Energy, E.ON Next and EDF have together reached more than 125,000 customers to warn them about booking free smart meter upgrades.
  • Advocates say off-gas homes in rural and high-rise settings may face greater risk of disruptions without additional support measures.
