Nearly 2.65 Million UK Borrowers Owe Over £50,000 as Record Student Loan Hits £299,645

Overview

  • Figures released via an FOI to the Student Loans Company show that, as of 10 August 2025, 2,652,997 customers owed more than £50,000.
  • The largest individual student loan balance on record stood at £299,645.
  • A total of 8,607,271 customers had any outstanding student loan balance on the SLC’s books.
  • Some 2,478,047 customers had fully repaid their student loans by the same date.
  • The SLC said very high balances can reflect multiple loan products and system safeguards, noting the average balance on entry to repayment for English borrowers is £53,010, while Compare the Market has published guidance to help students and new graduates navigate loans and repayments.
