Nearly 2,000 Items Recalled After FDA Finds Rodent and Bird Contamination at Minneapolis Distributor

Consumers are instructed to destroy affected purchases to obtain refunds.

Overview

  • An FDA inspection of Gold Star Distribution’s north Minneapolis facility found rodent excreta, rodent urine, and bird droppings in areas where drugs, medical devices, human and pet food, cosmetics, and supplements were stored.
  • The recall covers products distributed to more than 50 outlets across Minnesota, Indiana, and North Dakota, including 54 Minnesota locations such as small markets, gas stations, and at least one daycare center.
  • Regulators warn of risks including Salmonella and leptospirosis, and note that contaminated drugs, devices, or topicals could trigger infections or other adverse effects.
  • Gold Star directs consumers and retailers to destroy recalled items and submit proof of destruction for refunds, and it is not accepting product returns.
  • The action does not apply to items shipped directly to stores by manufacturers or to frozen and refrigerated goods, and no related illnesses have been reported to date.
