Nearly 200 Newsrooms Protest Gaza Journalist Killings as CPJ Warns of Immediate Danger

Organizers cite a record journalist death toll under a ban on foreign reporting.

Overview

  • Nearly 200 outlets from about 50 countries will stage coordinated disruptions on Monday, including blacked-out front pages and programming breaks, in a protest organized by RSF, Avaaz and the IFJ.
  • The Committee to Protect Journalists says a dozen Gaza reporters targeted by online smear campaigns are in immediate danger and alleges a pattern of false accusations used to justify lethal strikes.
  • The IFJ reports at least 210 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, making the war the deadliest for the press in modern times, while Israel has barred foreign media from reporting freely in the enclave.
  • Recent incidents include an early August strike that killed Al Jazeera’s Anas al-Sharif and colleagues and near-simultaneous strikes at Nasser Hospital last week that killed more reporters, which Netanyahu called a “tragic mishap.”
  • The Israeli military says it does not target journalists and cites classified material to support its stance, as Israeli outlet +972 reported on a unit dubbed the “Legitimisation Cell” said to identify Gaza journalists as operatives.
