Nearly 200 Elderly Galician Emigrants Arrive in Vigo Under Xunta Return Program

The long-running Reencontros initiative funds brief, government-organized returns that reconnect elderly Latin America-based Galicians with their birthplace.

Overview

  • The latest cohort landed at Vigo’s Peinador airport from Venezuela, Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Bolivia, Argentina and Uruguay, with an average age of 79 and a participant aged 100.
  • The regional government allocated €400,000 for air tickets and is providing accommodation in the Panxón and Carballiño leisure residences.
  • Participants will stay for fifteen days in Galicia, with an option to extend up to two additional weeks for those with family in Spain.
  • Emigration secretary Antonio Rodríguez Miranda welcomed the group, describing the reunions as especially moving and a chance to experience a prosperous, modern Galicia.
  • Several travelers reported that retailers in Madrid refused to sell them mobile phones with a Spanish passport, requesting a DNI instead.
