Near-Final Build of Cancelled Game Boy Color Resident Evil Released by Preservationists

Community testing will determine if the recovered HotGen build can be finished from start to end.

Overview

  • Assistant programmer Pete Frith supplied the ROM and says the version is roughly 98% complete based on late-stage QA at the time.
  • The build restores content missing from earlier leaks, including the Tyrant and an ending, with optional patches to jump to the final battle or credits.
  • Games That Weren’t has not verified a full playthrough and is inviting players to help confirm end-to-end completion.
  • Unfinished elements remain, including incomplete cutscenes, incorrect sprite colours, duplicated sprites for Wesker and Barry, and zombies that kneel when defeated.
  • HotGen’s 1999 effort compressed a 32-bit, multi-disc game into an 8-bit, 2 MB cartridge before cancellation in 2000, which Frith recalls was ordered by Resident Evil’s “original creator.”
