An American Airlines flight mistakenly taxied into the path of a departing Delta flight at JFK airport due to the pilots being distracted by paperwork and visibility issues.
The incident, which occurred on January 13, 2023, was one of several serious near-collisions at major US airports that year, prompting the NTSB to start investigations into more than seven such cases, known as runway incursions.
The American Airlines Boeing 777, carrying 149 people bound for London, came within 1,400 feet of colliding with the Delta Air Lines Boeing 737, which had 159 people onboard.
The Delta flight was able to abort its takeoff run after an urgent instruction from air traffic controllers, averting a potential disaster.
The NTSB has not yet determined a probable cause for the close call and the investigation is ongoing.
