Ne Zha 2 Shatters Chinese Box Office Records During Lunar New Year

The animated sequel becomes China's highest-grossing film ever, driving a record $1.3 billion in holiday box office revenue.

Ne Zha 2, the sequel to the 2019 animated hit, has grossed over ¥5.8 billion ($665.7 million) during the Lunar New Year period, setting multiple records.
The film is projected to reach ¥8.7 billion ($1.2 billion), potentially becoming the highest-grossing movie ever in a single market, surpassing Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ North American record.
China's overall Lunar New Year box office revenue hit a historic high of $1.3 billion, with 187 million tickets sold, marking an 18.8% increase from last year.
Imax recorded its most successful Chinese New Year ever, earning $53 million, with Ne Zha 2 contributing $36 million to its total.
Other major releases during the holiday, including Detective Chinatown 1900 and Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force, also performed strongly, showcasing the strength of local franchises.
