NDMC Unveils Phased Smart Irrigation and Sewer Upgrade Plan for Central Delhi

Tenders for the first 19.28 km of automated watering open this month with awards expected by March 2026.

Overview

  • Phase I will install smart irrigation along 11 major roads at an estimated cost of ₹15.94 crore, with bids scheduled to open on January 27 and work to be awarded before March.
  • NDMC plans a 2026–27 expansion to 11 additional roads and five major gardens, including Lodhi Garden and Talkatora Garden, at an estimated cost of about ₹16 crore.
  • Officials say the automated systems could cut irrigation water use by up to 70% and reduce the need for slow-moving tanker trips on arterial roads.
  • Twelve decentralised sewage treatment plants now supply recycled water for horticulture, with five more proposed totaling 2,250 KLD at about ₹57 crore and targeted for commissioning in November 2026.
  • Eight additional DSTPs are proposed under a PPP model with an estimated outlay of ₹150 crore, alongside forthcoming consideration of sewer-line rehabilitation in Lutyens’ Delhi using modern methods to limit disruption.
