NDA Fast-Tracks Bihar Government Formation as Nitish Kumar Set for 10th Term

Allies have settled on a one-per-six MLA cabinet formula, with an oath-taking expected this week.

Overview

  • The NDA secured about 202 of 243 seats, with the BJP at 89 and JD(U) at 85, while the opposition alliance fell to roughly 35 seats.
  • Alliance partners agreed to a ‘one minister per six MLAs’ formula that would allot the BJP roughly 15–16 berths, JD(U) about 14, and smaller allies a handful of posts.
  • Election officials have handed the final MLA list to the Governor, Nitish Kumar is slated to resign to clear the way for a new government, and the swearing-in is being lined up for November 19–21 depending on the Prime Minister’s schedule.
  • The Bihar BJP issued show-cause notices and suspended R.K. Singh, Ashok Kumar Agarwal and Usha Agarwal for alleged anti-party activity, and some outlets reported Singh’s expulsion, which has not been otherwise confirmed.
  • Jan Suraaj leaders alleged large pre-poll spending and Rs 10,000 transfers to women, including funds tied to a World Bank loan, claims that are unverified and were dismissed by LJP(RV) chief Chirag Paswan.
