Overview

• The National Commission for Women (NCW) has formed a committee to investigate allegations of molestation and forced displacement of women during the April 11-12 violence in Murshidabad.
• The unrest, triggered by protests against the amended Waqf Act, resulted in at least three deaths, several injuries, and widespread displacement of women and families.
• Numerous women in Dhulian’s Mandirpara area reportedly faced molestation, while hundreds fled their homes, crossing the Bhagirathi River to seek safety in Malda district.
• Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, along with NCW members Dr. Archana Majumdar and Dr. Shivani Dey, will visit Kolkata, Malda, and the worst-hit areas of Murshidabad from April 17 to 19 to meet victims and assess the situation.
• The committee aims to engage with survivors, local authorities, and law enforcement to recommend measures preventing future incidents and addressing systemic issues.
