Overview

  • Police registered 6,241,569 cognizable cases in 2023, pushing the national crime rate to 448.3 per lakh population from 422.2 a year earlier.
  • Cybercrime jumped 31.2% to 86,420 cases, with fraud constituting about 68.9% of incidents as the cybercrime rate rose from 4.8 to 6.2 per lakh.
  • Murder cases declined 2.8% to 27,721, with disputes cited as the leading motive in 9,209 cases, followed by personal enmity and killings for gain.
  • Crimes against children increased 9.2% to 177,335 cases—driven by kidnapping/abduction and POCSO offences—while crimes against Scheduled Tribes rose 28.8% to 12,960.
  • Metropolitan cities recorded a 10.6% rise in cognizable crimes; Delhi led with about 3.23 lakh IPC cases and the highest crimes against women among metros (13,366), alongside the lowest chargesheeting rate.
