NCRB Data Show Major Violent Crimes in India Fell Sharply From 2014 to 2023

Officials credit police modernization, including wider CCTNS linkage and ASUMP funding.

Overview

  • NCRB figures for 2023 show riots down 40% to 39,260, reported rapes down 19% to 29,670, dowry deaths down 27% to 6,156, and murders at 27,721, about 18% below the UPA-era average.
  • Across the four categories, total cases fell 29% from 1.45 lakh in 2014 to 1.02 lakh in 2023, dropping below the 1.18 lakh recorded in 2004.

  • The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems now links 17,712 police stations with access to more than 35.24 crore records nationwide, according to government sources.
  • Since 2021, the Centre has allocated Rs 4,846 crore under the ASUMP scheme to equip state police with modern technologies, communication systems, mobility support and infrastructure.
