Overview
- NCRB figures for 2023 show riots down 40% to 39,260, reported rapes down 19% to 29,670, dowry deaths down 27% to 6,156, and murders at 27,721, about 18% below the UPA-era average.
- Across the four categories, total cases fell 29% from 1.45 lakh in 2014 to 1.02 lakh in 2023, dropping below the 1.18 lakh recorded in 2004.
- The decline follows a 2004–2014 surge, including reported rapes nearly doubling from 18,233 to 36,735, which set the higher baseline cited in the analyses.
- The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems now links 17,712 police stations with access to more than 35.24 crore records nationwide, according to government sources.
