NCRB Data for 2023 Shows Crime Up 7.2% as Cyber Offences Surge, Murders Edge Down

Fraud‑heavy cybercrime alongside higher SLL registrations powered the increase.

Overview

  • India logged 62,41,569 cognizable cases in 2023, up 7.2% year on year, with 37.63 lakh under the IPC and 24.78 lakh under Special and Local Laws as the overall crime rate rose to 448.3 per lakh.
  • Cybercrime jumped 31.2% to 86,420 cases, with fraud accounting for 68.9% (59,526) of incidents while the cybercrime rate increased from 4.8 to 6.2 per lakh.
  • Murder cases fell 2.8% to 27,721 as key bodily offences eased, crimes against women were broadly flat at 4,48,211, and crimes against children rose 9.2% to 1,77,335 with large POCSO caseloads.
  • Crimes against Scheduled Tribes rose 28.8% to 12,960, with Manipur reporting 3,399 cases, while Motor Vehicle Act violations roughly doubled from 94,450 to 1,91,828, contributing to SLL growth of 9.5%.
  • Among 19 metropolitan cities, Delhi recorded the most IPC cases and led metro counts for rape (1,088) and crimes by juveniles (2,278), with thefts dominating city‑level offence profiles.
