NCRB Crime in India 2023 Shows Cybercrime Surge and Stark State Contrasts

The newly released dataset underscores a steep rise in online offences as Delhi posts the year’s highest crime rate.

  • Cybercrime cases rose 31.2% to 86,420 in 2023, driven largely by financial fraud, with Bengaluru (17,631), Hyderabad (4,855) and Mumbai (4,131) leading among metros.

  • Mumbai’s registered crime fell 35% to 44,873 with detection up to 76%, even as the city faced a sharp rise and heavy pendency in cyber offences.
  • Maharashtra led in Prevention of Corruption Act cases (763) and copyright violations (335), Uttar Pradesh reported no communal riots and a crime rate below the national average, and Pune saw steep increases in cyber, women and child offences.
