Overview

• Cybercrime cases rose 31.2% to 86,420 in 2023, driven largely by financial fraud, with Bengaluru (17,631), Hyderabad (4,855) and Mumbai (4,131) leading among metros.
• Crimes against women totaled 448,211, with cruelty by husbands or relatives the largest share, while Haryana logged 1,772 rape cases and one of the highest rape rates nationally.
• Delhi recorded the country’s highest crime rate at 1,508 per lakh; crimes by foreigners halved to 130 as cases against foreigners increased to 63.
• Mumbai’s registered crime fell 35% to 44,873 with detection up to 76%, even as the city faced a sharp rise and heavy pendency in cyber offences.
• Maharashtra led in Prevention of Corruption Act cases (763) and copyright violations (335), Uttar Pradesh reported no communal riots and a crime rate below the national average, and Pune saw steep increases in cyber, women and child offences.
