NCRB 2024: Crime Falls 6% Nationally as Delhi Still Leads in Key Offences

Rises in cybercrime, juvenile offences, child cases, plus attacks on seniors signal shifting risks.

Overview

  • India recorded 58.85 lakh cognisable crimes in 2024 after Wednesday's NCRB release put the annual drop at 6% and the crime rate at 418.9 per lakh.
  • Delhi logged 2,75,402 cases, down about 15% from 2023, yet it led metro cities in crimes against women at 13,396, juvenile cases at 2,306, thefts at 1,80,973, and kidnappings at 5,580.
  • Nationwide, cases involving juveniles rose 11.2% to 34,878, crimes against children reached 1,87,702, and offences against senior citizens climbed 16.9% to 32,602.
  • Cybercrime increased 17.9% across India to 1,01,928 cases, even as Delhi's registered cyber cases edged down to 404.
  • A mid‑2024 shift to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita redefined offences such as 'hurt', which the NCRB warns makes year‑to‑year comparisons less straightforward.
