NCRB 2023 Report: Recorded Crime Rises 7% as Cyber Offences Surge and Murders Decline

The new report spotlights a cybercrime spike alongside elevated risks for Scheduled Tribes and children.

Overview

  • India logged 62,41,569 cognizable cases in 2023, up 7.2% from 2022, pushing the national crime rate to 448.3 per lakh population based on 2011 Census figures.
  • Cybercrime cases jumped 31.2% to 86,420 with roughly 69% linked to fraud, and high burdens in states such as Karnataka and Telangana coincided with low chargesheeting rates in several hotspots.
  • Murder cases fell 2.8% to 27,721, with disputes the most common recorded motive, followed by personal enmity and crimes for gain.
  • Crimes against Scheduled Tribes increased 28.8% to 12,960 (rate 12.4), crimes against children rose 9.2% to 1,77,335 led by kidnapping and POCSO offences, and cases against women edged up to about 4.48 lakh.
  • Metropolitan cities reported a 10.6% rise in cases; Delhi led IPC registrations and recorded the most crimes against women, children and senior citizens, while thefts and Motor Vehicle Act violations also climbed.
