Overview
- India registered 6,241,569 cognizable crimes in 2023, up 7.2% year on year, lifting the recorded crime rate to 448.3 per lakh based on 2011 Census population.
- Cyber offences rose 31.2% to 86,420 cases, dominated by fraud (59,526 cases) as the cybercrime rate increased to 6.2 per lakh.
- Crimes against children climbed 9.2% to 177,335 cases, led by 79,884 kidnappings and 67,694 POCSO offences.
- Offences targeting Scheduled Tribes jumped 28.8% to 12,960 cases, even as murders edged down 2.8% to 27,721 with “disputes” the most cited motive.
- Metropolitan burdens intensified with Delhi logging the most IPC cases and the highest crimes against women among metros, while thefts, obstruction on public way and Motor Vehicle Act violations all rose sharply.
