NCRB 2023: Crime Up 7.2% as Cybercrime Jumps 31%; Delhi Leads Metro Caseload

The bureau links the rise chiefly to cyber fraud, with digital reporting and broader registration under special laws inflating totals.

  • Cybercrime cases rose to 86,420, up 31.2% from 2022, with fraud accounting for 59,526 incidents, or 68.9% of the total.
  • Karnataka reported the most cyber cases (21,889), followed by Telangana (18,236) and Uttar Pradesh (10,794), reflecting concentrated state-level spikes.
  • Delhi logged 3.23 lakh IPC cases, roughly 8% higher year-on-year, and led metros in reported rape cases (1,088) and crimes by juveniles (2,278), while recording the lowest chargesheeting rate among big cities.
  • Crimes against Scheduled Tribes rose 28.8% to 12,960, with Manipur alone reporting 3,399 cases and sharp increases in arson, dacoity and land-related offences.
  • Crimes against foreigners increased 24% to 238 cases with Delhi topping at 63, while measurement effects also pushed totals higher, including Motor Vehicle Act cases doubling to 1.92 lakh and more e‑FIR‑driven theft registrations.
