NCERT to Reexamine Rajasthan Map in Class 8 Textbook After Rajput Protests

Michel Danino says an expert panel will evaluate the disputed historical borders to inform revisions for upcoming editions.

Overview

  • A Class 8 social science map depicts Jaisalmer, Mewar, Bundi and large parts of Rajasthan as territory under the eighteenth-century Maratha Empire.
  • Descendants of Rajput dynasties and BJP MPs, including Chaitanya Raj Singh and Mahima Kumari, have condemned the depiction as misleading and demanded corrections.
  • NCERT has convened an expert panel that has acknowledged omitting a disclaimer on the approximate nature of historical borders and is reviewing the map’s accuracy.
  • Historians such as B L Bhadani and Rahul Magar say the map conflates tribute collection with direct Maratha rule and misrepresents regional sovereignty.
  • Chairperson Michel Danino has pledged further research and indicated a revised map will be prepared for future textbook editions if inaccuracies are confirmed.
