NCERT Rolls Out Swadeshi Modules to Teach ‘Vocal for Local’ in Schools

The materials connect the 1905 movement for indigenous goods to current self-reliance drives to shape classroom learning on consumer choices.

Overview

  • NCERT released two stage-specific modules titled “Swadeshi: Vocal for Local” (middle stage) and “Swadeshi: For a Self-Reliant India” (secondary stage).
  • The modules open with excerpts from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 79th Independence Day address urging citizens and shopkeepers to back India-made goods as an act of pride.
  • Lessons trace the 1905 Swadeshi Movement and highlight figures such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore to frame self-reliance as a civic value.
  • Contemporary initiatives feature prominently, including the India Semiconductor Mission, ISRO achievements and Make in India, with chips presented as vital for growth and national security.
  • Case studies show practical pathways from Kerala’s Bodhi Sathwa Coir Works and a Jodhpur gaushala enterprise to ODOP products listed on GeM and ONDC and showcased on “ODOP Walls” abroad.
