NCERT Releases Introductory Computational Thinking and AI Module for Grades 9–12

The module teaches verification of AI outputs, protection of personal data, responsible prompting, ethical use of tools.

Overview

  • NCERT formally published the beginner module on Classes 9–12 on Saturday, October 24, 2026, as a foundational resource aligned with the National Education Policy 2020.
  • The resource is a hands-on, roughly 20-hour course organised into five units that explain how AI works, why it fails, how machines learn, data privacy, and practical use of modern AI tools.
  • Activities are designed to run with full device access, teacher-led demonstrations, or 'unplugged' exercises on paper so the module can be used in both high- and low‑resource schools.
  • Ethics and safety are central: the module trains students to verify AI outputs, spot misinformation and deepfakes, avoid sharing sensitive identifiers, and consider fairness and consent under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection framework.
  • The module was developed with faculty from IIT Madras, IIT Jodhpur and NCERT and uses India‑specific examples such as Aadhaar and UPI, but the articles do not detail a national rollout, teacher training plan, or whether the module will be mandatory.
