NCERT Releases 20-Hour AI and Computational Thinking Module for Grades 9–12

The activity-based course gives schools a flexible ethics-first toolkit to teach data privacy, deepfake detection, prompt use, responsible judgment.

Overview

  • NCERT released the 20-hour introductory module on Saturday, October 24, structured into five units that explain AI in daily life, how machines learn, why AI makes errors, data privacy, and modern AI tools.
  • The module uses hands-on learning and offers three delivery modes—individual devices, teacher-led demonstrations, and 'unplugged' paper-and-discussion exercises—so schools with poor internet or few computers can still run the lessons.
  • Ethics and safety are central: students learn India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, how to avoid sharing Aadhaar, PAN, passwords or OTPs with AI, and a five-step method to verify AI outputs and detect deepfakes.
  • Faculty from IIT Madras, IIT Jodhpur and NCERT helped develop the material, which promotes a 'helper-stance' for AI and asks students to keep a 'Curious Notebook' to record observations and corrections.
  • The module complements CBSE’s earlier CT/AI curriculum for Classes 3–8 and could shape secondary-school AI literacy, but NCERT has not announced a rollout date or whether the material will be mandatory.
