NCERT Releases 20-Hour AI and Computational Thinking Module for Classes 9–12

Designed for low-resource classrooms, the module centers ethics, hands-on activities, verification, human judgment to build AI literacy.

Overview

  • NCERT released a 20-hour, activity-based introductory module for Classes 9–12 on Oct. 24, 2026 that explains how AI works and how to use it responsibly.
  • The module is split into five units that cover everyday AI, how machines learn, why AI makes mistakes, data privacy and the responsible use of modern AI tools.
  • Teachers can deliver the lessons in three modes — individual or paired devices, teacher-led demonstrations, or 'unplugged' paper-and-discussion activities — so schools with limited tech can participate.
  • The curriculum foregrounds ethics and safety by teaching students to spot deepfakes, avoid sharing sensitive data, apply a five-step verification for AI outputs, and learn about India’s DPDP Act, 2023.
  • Developed by faculty from IIT Madras, IIT Jodhpur and NCERT and aligned with NEP 2020 and earlier CBSE steps for younger grades, the module is positioned as the next staged resource in a wider national push to expand AI literacy in schools.
