NCERT Confirms Regional Resistance Movements in Class 8 Textbook Second Volume

The council says the installment will fill gaps on regional uprisings in its two-part Social Science series under NEP 2020 guidelines.

Overview

  • NCERT stated that the newly released Exploring Society: India and Beyond is only the first volume and has not dropped regional resistance topics permanently.
  • Volume 2 is in its final stages of development and is scheduled for release in September–October 2025.
  • The upcoming volume will cover armed uprisings such as the Paika rebellion in Odisha, the Khurda uprising and the Kuka movement in Punjab.
  • Part 1 of the Class 8 book introduces the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal rule and includes a cautionary note on darker periods of history to contextualize atrocities.
  • The two-volume overhaul follows NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023 integration directives and has prompted support from BJP leaders and criticism from Congress figures and regional representatives.
